Wuyuan is a county of whitewashed Hui-style villages set among tea hills and terraced fields. For two or three weeks in spring those terraces turn brilliant yellow with flowering rapeseed, and the place becomes one of the most photographed landscapes in China.
Timing the bloom
The bloom usually peaks from mid-March to early April, but it shifts a week or two each year with the weather. Higher terraces flower later than the valley floor, which actually extends your window — if the lowland fields are past their best, climb higher.
Beyond the bloom
Wuyuan rewards visitors year-round if you know what to look for. Autumn brings the "shai qiu" harvest, when villagers sun-dry red chillies and golden corn on round trays across the tiled rooftops of Huangling. The Hui-style architecture — carved wooden lintels, moon gates, ancestral halls — stands regardless of season, and the tea is picked from spring through early summer.
