Most journeys through Jiangxi begin in Nanchang — it has the main airport and the central rail hub. But the capital is more than a transit point: a city on the Gan River with a famous pavilion, a riverfront that lights up at night, and a place in modern Chinese history worth an unhurried day.

The Tengwang Pavilion

The Tengwang Pavilion is one of the "Three Great Towers of southern China", immortalised in a Tang-dynasty essay so famous it is still memorised in schools. The present structure is a grand 1980s reconstruction, but the view it frames — the wide Gan River, the modern skyline beyond — is the same one that has drawn writers for thirteen centuries.

The setting sun and a lone wild duck fly together; autumn waters share one hue with the boundless sky.

— Wang Bo, "Preface to the Tengwang Pavilion" ·

A river that puts on a show

After dark, Nanchang stages one of the largest permanent light shows in the world: the towers along both banks of the Gan River become synchronised screens, the display reflected the full width of the water. It is best seen from a river cruise or the Yanjiang promenade, and it is free.

Nanchang food is boldly spicy — rice noodles, river fish, and the local "three cups" chicken, best found in the small places locals actually eat rather than the tourist strips.
