Likeng: Wuyuan’s Water Village of Scholars
A thousand-year-old Hui village threaded by a single clear creek — stone bridges, whitewashed merchant houses, and a learning tradition that sent its sons to the imperial exams. The classic “small bridges, flowing water, households,” best framed by the spring rapeseed.

Likeng is the village people picture when they imagine Wuyuan: white walls and black tiles stacked along a clear creek, arched stone bridges doubling themselves in the water, and willow shade over the lanes. Founded in 1010 during the Northern Song and settled by families of the surname Li, it is one of the best-preserved waterside villages on Wuyuan’s eastern route — a living version of the classical ink-painting phrase, “small bridges, flowing water, households.”
Small bridges, flowing water, households
The village is laid out along an S-shaped creek that splits and rejoins as it threads the lanes. Dozens of bridges — stone, timber and brick — cross it, so densely that locals describe the heart of the village as “ten bridges, nine views.” Bluestone paths run the length of both banks, and more than two hundred historic Ming and Qing houses lean over the water, their carved lintels and horse-head gables mirrored in the slow current. It is small — the main sights take an hour or two on foot — but it rewards a slow pace.
A village that read its way out
Likeng was never just pretty. Water transport made it a prosperous merchant post, and prosperity bought books: from the Song to the Qing the village produced more than a hundred notable figures, among them dozens of civil and military officials, who between them are credited with some thirty published works. The Southern Song martial-exam laureate Li Zhicheng came from here. When its scholars and merchants made good, they came home and built — which is why so much fine carving survives along one small creek.
Even a village of ten households never lets the sound of reading fall silent.

What to seek out
- Shenming Pavilion 申明亭 — one of the village’s oldest buildings and once its open-air arbitration hall, standing where the two streams meet申明亭 — 村中最古老的建築之一,昔日露天評理之所,立於兩溪交匯處
- Li Zhicheng’s former residence 李知誠故居 — home of the martial laureate, with an 800-year-old crape-myrtle “ticklish tree” in the court李知誠故居 — 武狀元舊宅,院中有一株八百年的紫薇「癢癢樹」
- Daifu Di 大夫第 — a Qing official’s mansion, complete with an embroidery tower and its balcony for tossing the silk ball大夫第 — 清代官宅,附有小姐繡樓與拋繡球的挑台
Timing the bloom
Like the rest of Wuyuan, Likeng is at its most photographed in spring, when the rapeseed fields around the village flood gold from mid-March into early April. The flowers frame the white gables and the creek; on a clear morning, mist settles over the water before the sun burns it off. The bloom shifts a week or two each year with the weather, so build in a little flexibility.
Getting there & visiting
Likeng sits on Wuyuan’s eastern route, about 12 km from the county town and an easy add-on to Jiangwan and the Jiangling terraces. Most visitors reach Wuyuan by high-speed rail, then continue by car or sightseeing bus. From the scenic-area gate it is a 10–15 minute walk into the heart of the village; an electric cart and short bamboo-raft rides cover the rest.
Likeng pairs naturally with the rest of Wuyuan — the Jiangling terraces and Jiangwan by day, and the lantern-lit night town of Wunvzhou to close the evening.
